No Pipe Dream: Connie R. Taylor Triumphs as a Woman in a Man's World
Pipeline consultant Connie R. Taylor strives to break down barriers and is grateful for the opportunities that she's been given.
DECATUR, TX, December 18, 2010 /Women in Business PR News/ --"It is a great profession to be in," says Connie R. Taylor, of the pipeline industry, "if you are willing to do what it takes to make it in a man's world." She adds this caveat, knowing full well the obstacles that she faced in choosing a field that only begrudgingly accepts women. A pipeline consultant and procurement manager in the inspection unit at Wellsco Field Services, Ms. Taylor is used to being the only female in her group, underestimated despite possessing 23 years of hands-on experience in material control and pipeline construction.
Ms. Taylor has done more than prove that she belongs. She has enjoyed a highly technical career and, before joining Wellsco, lent her talents to Honeywell International, Cessna Aircraft Company and Rockwell International, where she attained her first managerial position. In her stints at these companies, she helped build computers, space shuttles, B1 Bombers, and Black Hawk and Sikorsky helicopters. Employing a "go big or go home" mentality, Ms. Taylor managed not only to hold her own in occupations traditionally dominated by men - she also found ways to break down walls. She became the first female chief inspector for Universal Ensco and the first female area chief inspector for Wellsco and Mustang Engineering, L.P. She also personally inspected the Alliance Pipeline - at the time the largest mechanized welded gas pipeline in North America - and considers this the highlight of a career defined by milestones.
Happy just to get her foot in the door, Ms. Taylor had no qualms about starting at the bottom. She maintains that it only benefited her career to know her field inside-out, and advises people aspiring to venture into the pipeline industry to keep a similar openness. "Don't be in a hurry to move up," she says. "It's not a race, it's how well you know your business when you get to the top. You will make mistakes, and you will figure [them] out and be better for it." Ms. Taylor also acknowledges the role that others have played in her success; her husband, a field superintendent for Pinnacle Royalty at the time, was the first to train her on gas gathering and pipelining, while it was an old mentor who went out on a limb and hired her - Harold Gene Wells, who helped found Wellsco at the age of 80. "He gave me the chance and the opportunity to become a pipeline consultant. Not many people will take a chance on a woman [as] a project manager or a pipeline consultant in the gas and oil field," she states.
"There's no limit to what you can do, if you're given the opportunity," she continues. "I have taken what opportunity I [had] and I strived to improve [on] that and do the best I can." Not satisfied with what she has accomplished, Ms. Taylor is on the lookout for the next opportunity, the next challenge. She plans to expand to other aspects of pipeline consulting and construction. At the heart of it, she wants to keep working because she just loves what she does. "If a new opportunity comes along, I wouldn't hesitate to take it. It might be a new avenue in the field I'm in, but I'm always looking for something that's challenging," she avers. "I work hard and, actually, I kind of thrive in chaos. This business kind of calls for that."
Ms. Taylor has several certifications, including occupational safety and health administration, environmental safety, and assessment for abnormal operating conditions. She is also certified as a CPR instructor by Devon Emergency Care and is a certified mechanized welding inspector. Away from work, she enjoys painting, spending time with her grandchildren, and supporting The University of Oklahoma football team.
